THE PROCESS AND REQUIREMENTS TO GET YOUR CONCEALED CARRY IN NJ

THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT HAS REVERSED THE NEW JERSEY STANDARD FOR THE “JUSTIFIABLE NEED” REQUIREMENT FOR CARRYING A CONCEALED HANDGUN.

The State of New Jersey has stipulated training requirements which are necessary prior to submitting your concealed carry application.

Applications which are incomplete or do not meet the requirements will be denied.

You will be required to demonstrate safety, familiarity, and accuracy. This will be a pass or fail, you must pass with an 80% or better.

The training requirements are explained in N.J.A.C. 13:54-2.4(B) and 2C:58-4. These statutes require that a person wishing to meet the requirements of concealed carry attend and receive training and pass a qualification course of fire. The qualification process consists of:

1.) A demonstration of safe handling and use of handguns as per N.J.S.A. 2C:58-4.

2.) Submission of the applicant’s most recent handgun qualification scores and attendance of a Use of Force, Safe Handling, Prohibited Carry areas and contact with Law Enforcement Officers while carrying classroom training session administered by a certified firearms instructor of a police academy, a certified firearms instructor of the National Rifle Association, or any other recognized certified firearms instructor

The Tactical Training Center offers a training program designed to meet and exceed the training requirements for the concealed carry application. Our instructors have experience and certifications far exceeding those at other ranges.

CCW Qualification Sessions

We consider this the “fast track” for those who have had holster draw training. Please do not sign up for one of these qualifications until you have had the training necessary to pass.

Additional information: The TTC is pleased to offer the NJ shooting community assistance in obtaining their Permit to Carry a Handgun. This qualification session, CCW QUALIFICATION FOR NJ CARRY PERMIT (Includes an equivalent CCARES), meets and exceeds the state mandated requirements for the NJ Permit to Carry a Handgun, and includes the mandatory subject matter in Safe Handling and CCARES equivalent qualification course.  THIS IS NOT A TRAINING CLASS, it is a certification session. It is expected that the attendee possess the knowledge, skills and attitude to pass the requirements of the qualification process.

Upon successful completion, the attendee will be provided with a “qualification sheet” N.J.S.P. Form S.P. 182 documenting the necessary information to submit for a request for a Permit to Carry a Handgun and a copy of the Instructors certification necessary for uploading into the NJ FARS system.

It is recommended that the student familiarize themselves with NJ Use of Force and self-defense laws, review firearms safe handling standards and marksmanship techniques. The shooting course of fire exceeds the CCARES qualification course, which requires the shooting from various distances from the 1 to 15 yard line, drawing from the holster and holstering from concealed, the low ready position, one handed shooting (strong hand only), and the standing to kneeling position. An 80% score is required to pass.

If you are brand new to firearms in NJ, live in NJ and want to obtain a permit to carry a concealed handgun, we suggest the following:

  1. Obtain a NJ Firearms I.D. Card and a NJ Permit to Purchase a Handgun (we actually recommend obtaining 2 permits, as you may likely purchase more than 1 handgun). This can be done by visiting your local police department’s website firearms page, or if you live within NJSP jurisdiction, go directly to the NJSP FARS page and contact the local barracks where you live for their ORI number to properly initiate the qualification process.
  2. Make sure that your NJ Driver’s License matches your address.
  3. Submit your NJ Firearms ID card and Permit to Purchase a Handgun application.  While waiting to receive your permits, feel free to attend our Basic Handgun class and enroll in some 1-on-1 try to buy training classes to find which handgun you want to start out with.  We recommend a mid-sized handgun such as a Glock 19, Sig Sauer P320, Walther PPK, H&K VP9.  Feel free to speak with our professional sales staff to make an educated decision.
  4. Upon receiving your permits, make a purchase and enroll in the Intermediate Handgun series.  You may also want to start practicing on your own during open range times.  Upon purchase of a firearm, you will receive a 1-month complimentary membership.
  5. Take the Holster Draw CCW prep series, and we strongly suggest the Advanced Handgun series.
  6. When you’re ready and after practicing, enroll in the CCW QUALIFICATION FOR NJ CARRY PERMIT (Includes an equivalent CCARES).  This class is a qualification and certification class, where we act as a third party and certify that you possess the skills, knowledge and abilities to meet the NJ State standards.

After you obtain your NJ Permit to carry a concealed handgun, we highly recommend that you continue to train and complete the Advanced Handgun series and the Concealed Handgun series.  If you use your permit to carry to defend yourself or your family, you may likely do so in your home, in public, a parking lot, vehicle or other environments that you should possess skills and knowledge to do so.

We will continue to add courses as necessary to meet the needs of our customers.
