Handgun Training

The cornerstone of our training program

Handgun training is the cornerstone of our training program at the Tactical Training Center. Our goal is for you to be comfortable in handling and operating a handgun in the “360 degree environment” and that includes in your own home, carrying concealed, and while in all environments and conditions. All of our classes are built upon the premise of self-defense and the defense of another family member or friend.  We have the best instructors with a variety of backgrounds and extensive experience to include active duty and retired law enforcement, S.W.A.T. and military instructors.

Our classes pose the best value for training and only cost a little more than open range time, on a per hour basis.  Train with us and learn the right way, the first time.

Please check our calendar routinely for specialty classes that may not be listed here, such as our Low-Light classes, High Intensity Training Sessions (HITS), and our specialty classes such as Tactical Handgun I and II, Running the 1911 or Hi-Power, Running the Sig Sauer P220, P226, P229 series, Running the Beretta M9/92F series, Alternative

Handgun Concepts: Malfunctions, Support Hand and Left Handed shooting, Running a Micro Pistol, our Skills Classes, and our CCW Casualty Care I and II.

To check for dates, times or to register for any of these classes, please see below or go to our Class Calendar page.

BASIC HANDGUN

Duration: 4.25 hours

Whether it’s for recreational shooting, home or personal defense or trying to decide which handgun best suits your needs and abilities, the Basic Handgun is our most popular class and is designed to introduce the new shooter to understanding the basics of handgun shooting.

In a relaxed small group class, the course content includes the fundamentals of safety, basic function, operation and marksmanship in a friendly and encouraging manner. We will introduce you to the basics of firearms discussing safety, security, functionality, loading and unloading of the handgun. The class format includes foundational information such as determining your “dominant eye”, how to establish an appropriate shooting stance to enhance accuracy, minimize recoil and handgun reliability. Finally the instructor will answer those common questions on how to obtain permits to purchase handguns in New Jersey and the best manner in which to possess and transport those items both intra and inter-state.

During this class, you will fire various handguns for familiarity to include both semi-automatic pistol(s) and the more traditional revolver(s). The calibers will start at 22LR and advance to .38 Special and/or 9mm as appropriate for you. This is an excellent class to use as the initial block in your firearms training or exploration, and upon completion you will be prepared for our Intermediate Handgun Series of training classes, where the real skill starts to grow.

The 4.25 hour Basic Handgun class includes firearms, ammunition, targets and both classroom and range time instruction.

INTERMEDIATE HANDGUN: OBTAINING SKILLSETS

Duration: TWO, 3 HOUR CLASSES
INTERMEDIATE HANDGUN I
INTERMEDIATE HANDGUN II

Our Intermediate Handgun series of classes is a two part series, and is designed to provide the graduate of our Basic Handgun class, or other novice shooter, with a smooth transition from classroom centered learning to practical based shooting exercises. This session is “hands-on” and occurs privately on the range in a class setting, while the range is closed to the public. This session focuses on handgun reliability by incorporating an effective, standardized loading, unloading and reloading procedure. This allows for safety and confidence ensuring 100% reliability and the development of shooter proficiency.  This session includes an introduction to marksmanship fundamentals.  The students will learn the concepts of proper stance, body positions, grip, trigger press and sight alignment.  Dry fire and live fire training will be intermixed to maximize the learning process and minimize ammunition expenses and shooter fatigue.

HOLSTER DRAW CCW PREP AND HOLSTER CERTIFICATION

Duration: Two, 3 HOUR CLASSES
Holster Draw CCW PREP I
Holster Draw II CCW PREP II (includes certification testing)

This class provides two important elements; admittance into higher level training classes such as the Advanced Handgun series and the ability to draw fire and holster from the range. Drawing a handgun from the holster during open range session is only permitted at the Tactical Training Center with prior approval and certification.  If a shooter would like to draw from a holster during the open range periods, he/she must attend Holster Draw Class I and II and then successfully demonstrate a safe draw and holster technique to a certifying TTC Instructor.  The student then re-certifies on an annual basis, with a certification class, or by attendance of higher level classes.

For the safety of our members, customers and staff, drawing from the holster at the TTC may only be performed using an Outside The Waistband (OTW) or a non-collapsible Inside the Waistband Holster (IWB) holster in an open-carry status, while with the shooter remaining in his/her port. No clothing is to be covering the handgun or holster. Appendix carry, Ankle holsters, shoulder holsters, cross-draw holsters and holsters that collapse upon removing the handgun are not permitted.  Attachments to the handgun that allow the handgun to be carried within the clothing are also not permitted.  Concealed carry draw and holsters are not permitted (concealed carry draw and holstering may only be done during an approved course and only at the direction and discretion of the class Instructor).

The Tactical Training Center reserves the right to rescind any holster draw privileges.  The shooters must pass an assessment at the conclusion of Handgun Draw Class II.  Current law enforcement officers and retired police officers who possess a concealed carry permit are exempt from this certification process.

Attire: Attendees should wear comfortable clothing to include a long sleeve crew neck style shirt and closed toe footwear. The wearing of a brimmed ball cap is suggested, however not required.

Equipment: Shooters should bring a handgun, at least three (3) magazines or two (2) speed loaders (for revolvers), serviceable tactical/duty belt equipped with minimally one double magazine pouch (two speed loader pouches), and a OTW holster that will securely and properly hold/retain the handgun (and any attached accessory equipment (i.e. gun mounted light) and 100 rounds of ammunition per session.

Note: No specific holster retention level is mandated.

Safety: Both hearing and eye protection are required.

Waivers: If you have not already done so, the required general liability waiver can be downloaded and completed on-line before your scheduled training session if you prefer:

  1. General release of liability waiver (annually)
  2. Rental firearm use waiver-must be completed on the day of training if a TTC rental firearm is to be used for this training. If using a TTC rental firearm, ammunition must be purchased from us to be used in our firearm.
